About Tara June Winch

Tara June Winch was born in a city called Wollongong, in New South Wales, Australia. Her dad comes from the Wiradjuri people, who are an Aboriginal group from western New South Wales. Tara grew up near the coast in a place called Woonona, which is also in the Wollongong area.

She often writes stories that explore these two important places: the coast where she grew up and the land of her Wiradjuri ancestors. Today, Tara lives in both Australia and France.

Her First Book: Swallow the Air

Tara's first novel, Swallow the Air, came out in 2006. It quickly won many important Australian book awards! Judges from The Sydney Morning Herald newspaper said her book had "natural grace and vivid language." They also noted that it explored common experiences like growing up and family, but also connected them to bigger social ideas in a thoughtful way.

Learning from a Nobel Prize Winner

In 2008, something really cool happened! Tara was chosen for a special program called the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative. This program allowed her to learn from a very famous writer, Wole Soyinka, who had won the Nobel Prize! It was a great chance for her to grow as a writer.

After the Carnage and The Yield

Tara's second book, After the Carnage, was published in 2016. Critics loved it! One review in The Australian newspaper said that Tara "can pack a punch and break your heart within a few pages." They also praised how she used her writing skills to show how personal stories can connect to bigger political ideas.

Her 2019 novel, The Yield, was a huge success! It won seven major Australian literary awards in 2020. These included the Prime Minister's Literary Award for fiction and the highly respected Miles Franklin Literary Award.
