Tarhoncu Ahmed Pasha facts for kids
Tarhoncu Ahmed Pasha (who lived until March 21, 1653) was an important leader from the Ottoman Empire who was originally from Albania. He served as the Grand Vizier, which was like the chief minister, for the Ottoman Empire from June 20, 1652, to March 21, 1653. He was put to death because of new economic plans he tried to start.
Tarhoncu Ahmed Pasha was born in the early 1600s in what is now northern Albania, near the Mat District. Before he joined the government, he was known for selling a herb called tarragon. This is where he got the name Tarhoncu. He later became the Governor of Egypt before becoming the Grand Vizier.
During his short time as Grand Vizier, while Sultan Mehmet IV was ruling (1648–1687), Tarhoncu Ahmed Pasha tried to make the Ottoman government work better. He was the very first Grand Vizier to create a yearly budget for the government's money. This was a big step to help manage the empire's finances.
However, his new ideas and changes worried some powerful people in the Ottoman Empire. They spread false rumors that he planned to remove the Sultan from power. Because of these rumors, he was put to death on March 21, 1653. His death stopped these kinds of big government changes for several years.
