Tarlo is a small place located in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia. It is part of both Goulburn City and Upper Lachlan Shire. Tarlo stretches from the edge of Goulburn to the Tarlo River, which is south of the town of Taralga. In 2016, about 164 people lived here.

The Tarlo River

The Tarlo River is very important to this area. It is the main source of water for all living things, including plants, animals, and people. The river flows north towards Sydney. For centuries, it has provided a vital lifeline. This has helped create a rich natural environment and good farmlands. These farmlands are nestled at the base of Tarlo Hill.

History of Tarlo

Tarlo was officially named in 1885. It used to be a busy little village right by the river. Today, it is a peaceful rural area. You will see lots of farms and bushland. This makes for a beautiful drive if you are going to Taralga, Wombeyan Caves, Crookwell, or Goulburn.

Over the years, many families have had small farms in Tarlo. You can still see many cows and sheep across the landscape. There used to be a large pig farm called Riverview near the river. It is no longer there. Visitors can walk around the old grounds to get a sense of what life was like long ago.

The Tarlo River Bridge

In 1974, the road to Taralga was changed. This was done to build a new, stronger bridge over the Tarlo River. Local people had asked for a new bridge to replace the old one, which was damaged. The old bridge was built in 1908 and was about 400 meters south of the new one. You can still see the foundations of the old bridge today. It is now a nice spot for picnics and fishing.

Old Buildings in Tarlo

Tarlo still has several original buildings. One of these is the old Anglican Church, which has been restored. Another is the original Riverview cottage. This cottage sits on a hill overlooking the river. It was the first house on the road leading up from the river. It used to offer a safe place for tired travelers. They would often get caught by heavy rain when crossing the Tarlo River, which could flood suddenly. A bridge is still the only way to cross the river on this side of Goulburn. It provides an important link to Taralga and the north. Many people with cars, horses, and other animals used to get stuck when the river waters rose quickly.

Things to Do

Camping

Camping is a popular activity in Tarlo. People especially enjoy camping by the Tarlo River. The best time to go is during the warmer months, from September to April. There are not many public free camping spots. This is because most of Taralga Road is next to private land. However, some landowners do allow free camping. One such place is the Tarlo River Campgrounds.
