The Tarrytown Reservoir is a large storage reservoir located in Tarrytown, New York. It covers about 81 acres (0.33 km2) of land. This reservoir was finished in 1897. It was built by the Village of Tarrytown to be their main water supply.
The reservoir was created when the Tarrytown Waterworks Dam held back water from a small river that flows into the Saw Mill River. The reservoir could hold a lot of water, up to 1,100 acre-feet (1,400,000 m3).
About the Tarrytown Dam
The dam that formed the Tarrytown Reservoir is called the Tarrytown Waterworks Dam. It is made of earth, which means it's built from soil and rocks.
Dam Size and Location
This dam is about 18 foot (5.5 m) high and 315 foot (96 m) long. It sits at the beginning of a large area of land, about 1.4 square miles (3.6 km2), where rainwater collects and flows into the reservoir.
When the Reservoir Closed
The Tarrytown Reservoir was used for many years to provide water to the village. However, it was officially stopped from being used in 1993.
