Tasley's History
Tasley used to be known as Accomac Station. Its story began in 1884 when the railroad arrived. A train station was built, and train services started. The postal service also opened a post office in Tasley that same year.
A Busy Railroad Town
Tasley was once a very busy railroad town. It had many "firsts" for the county. It was home to the first electric power plant. It also had the first paved road. Tasley even had the county's first volunteer fire company.
The main highway, US 13, went right through the town. Steamships from Baltimore would dock nearby in Onancock. Goods and farm products were then taken to Tasley's train station. From there, they were quickly shipped out.
In its busiest times, Tasley had many businesses. There were three restaurants and four general stores. It also had a hotel, a post office, and the train station. Other businesses included tractor dealerships, sawmills, and an ice plant. There were also places that sold coal and cars. Many sheds were used for sorting farm produce.
Changes Over Time
In 1958, the railroad stopped carrying passengers. This was a big change for Tasley. Then, in the mid-1960s, a new highway bypass was built. This bypass took traffic away from the town center. Tasley became much quieter for many years.
Today, Tasley is seeing new life. It is home to A&N Electric Cooperative. This company provides electricity for the whole Eastern Shore of Virginia. The Foodbank of the Eastern Shore also has its main office here. Studebaker's Antiques sells old advertising items worldwide. A new fire station has been built. Some old buildings have been fixed up and are now used again.
