The Tasmanian froglet (Crinia tasmaniensis) is a small frog that lives only on the island of Tasmania, Australia. It's a special kind of frog because it stays on the ground.

What Does the Tasmanian Froglet Look Like?

This frog is quite small. It usually grows to about 30 millimeters (about 1.2 inches) long. Its color can change a lot. It might be brown (from dark to reddish) or grey.

Sometimes, it has spots or blotches of another color. Other times, it can be completely dark brown or black. The skin on its back can be bumpy or smooth.

You might see a reddish stripe that goes from its nose down its side. The frog's belly is mostly white. But it also has some red and dark spots, especially on its thighs.

Where Does the Tasmanian Froglet Live?

The Tasmanian froglet is found only in Tasmania. It likes to live in wet places. You can find it in shallow streams, temporary ponds, and puddles. It also lives in dams, swamps, and wet areas called soaks.

These frogs often live in higher places across Tasmania. They are commonly seen in the western part of the island. You can find them in different types of environments. These include rainforests, cleared areas, woodlands, and even alpine (mountain) habitats.

What Sounds Do They Make?

Male Tasmanian froglets make a unique sound. It sounds a bit like a lamb calling, like baaahh-ahh-aahh. They make this call from the land next to water. They can also call while floating in the water. They usually call during spring and summer.

Life Cycle and Reproduction

Female Tasmanian froglets lay their eggs in still water. They can lay eggs all year round. A female can lay up to 100 eggs at one time.

The eggs have large capsules around them, about 7 millimeters (about 0.28 inches) wide. The tadpoles are grey-brown. They can grow up to 30 millimeters (about 1.2 inches) long.

It takes about three months for the tadpoles to grow. After that, they change into tiny froglets. These young froglets are about 10 millimeters (about 0.4 inches) long. They look just like the adult frogs.

Special Facts About This Frog

The Tasmanian froglet is one of only three frog species that live only in Tasmania. This means they are endemic to Tasmania. You won't find them naturally anywhere else in the world!
