Early Life and Music Beginnings
Tasmin Archer grew up in Bradford, Yorkshire. After finishing school, she first worked with sewing machines. Later, she studied typing at Bradford College. She then became a clerk at Leeds Magistrates' Court.
Tasmin loved music from a young age. She joined a group called Dignity as a backing singer. She also played with different bands around Bradford. Tasmin helped out at a recording studio in Bradford. There, she started working with musicians John Hughes and John Beck. They formed a group called "The Archers." During this time, Tasmin learned a lot about the music business.
Tasmin Archer's Music Journey
Great Expectations Album
Tasmin Archer signed with a big music company called EMI in 1990. Her first song, "Sleeping Satellite," came out in September 1992. It quickly became number one on the UK Singles Chart! The song was also popular in the United States. It reached number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Her first album, Great Expectations, was released in October 1992. It reached number eight on the UK Albums Chart. By December, it had sold over 100,000 copies, earning a gold disc award. Other songs from the album also became hits in the UK. However, none were as big as "Sleeping Satellite."
Tasmin used her music to help others. She gave the money from her second song, "In Your Care," to Childline. Childline is a charity that helps children. In 1993, Tasmin won a BRIT Award for Best British Breakthrough Act. She later joked that she kept her award in her kitchen cupboard. She even said she used it to crack nuts!
Bloom Album and a Break
After a few years away, Tasmin came back in 1996. She released her second album, Bloom. But the first song from it, "One More Good Night with the Boys," did not reach the top 40 in the UK. The album itself only reached number 95.
By late 1997, Tasmin felt unhappy with EMI. She felt like she was just a product, not an artist. So, she decided to take a break from music. This break lasted for two years.
After her break, Tasmin felt ready to write music again. But she faced a challenge called "writer's block." This made it hard for her to finish new songs.
On Album Release
Tasmin worked through her writer's block. Starting in 2002, she and John Hughes began working on a new album. It was first going to be called Non-Linear, but they later named it On. They even shared some early versions of the songs online for free. People could listen and give their thoughts.
The album On was released on September 25, 2006. Tasmin released it on her own music label, Quiverdisc. A few days before, a song called "Every Time I Want It (Effect Is Monotony)" was released online.
Other Creative Work
In 2006, Tasmin shared that she and John Hughes were writing music for movies and TV shows. They later created music for the TV show EastEnders and other programs.
