Tasmin Archer's Early Life
Tasmin Archer was born in Bradford, England, on August 3, 1963. Her parents were from Jamaica. She went to Grange Upper School. After school, she worked as a sewing machine operator. Later, she studied typing at Bradford College and worked as a clerk at Leeds Magistrates' Court.
Tasmin loved music from a young age. She started singing as a backing vocalist for a group called Dignity. She also played with other bands in her hometown of Bradford. She helped out at a recording studio called Flexible Response Studios. There, she began working with musicians John Hughes and John Beck. They formed a group called "The Archers." This time helped Tasmin learn a lot about the music business.
Tasmin Archer's Music Career
Becoming Famous with Great Expectations
Tasmin Archer signed with EMI record label in 1990. Her first single, "Sleeping Satellite," came out in September 1992. It quickly became a huge hit, reaching number one on the UK Singles Chart. The song was also popular in the United States, where it reached number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Her first album, Great Expectations, was released in October 1992. It reached number eight on the UK Albums Chart. By December, it had sold over 100,000 copies, earning a gold disc award. Other songs from the album also became Top 40 hits in the UK, but "Sleeping Satellite" remained her biggest success.
Tasmin Archer used her music to help others. She donated the money she earned from her second single, "In Your Care," to Childline. This song was about helping children who were being hurt. In 1993, Tasmin won a BRIT Award for the Best British Breakthrough Act. She later joked that she kept her award in her kitchen and used it for cracking nuts!
Releasing Bloom
After a few years, Tasmin Archer released her second album, Bloom, in 1996. However, the first single from this album, "One More Good Night with the Boys", did not reach the UK Top 40. The album itself reached number 95 on the charts.
By late 1997, Tasmin felt unhappy with her record label, EMI. She felt like she was being treated like a product, not an artist. She decided to take a break from the music industry. This break lasted for two years. After her break, Tasmin wanted to write new music. However, she found it hard to finish songs, which is sometimes called "writer's block."
Creating the Album On
After working through her writer's block, Tasmin Archer and John Hughes started working on a new album in 2002. They first thought about calling it Non-Linear, but later decided on On.
The album On was released on September 25, 2006. Tasmin released it on her own record label, called Quiverdisc. Before the album, a song called "Every Time I Want It (Effect Is Monotony)" was released as a digital download on September 20.
Other Creative Work
In 2006, Tasmin Archer shared that she and John Hughes were looking for chances to write music for movies and TV shows. They later created music for popular shows like EastEnders and other programs.
New Music: A Cauldron of Random Notes
In July 2024, Tasmin shared exciting news on social media. She announced that her new album, "A Cauldron Of Random Notes," was finished. She also said they were planning to release it on vinyl in the autumn of 2024.
