Taste of Tasmania facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Taste of Tasmania is a super fun food and wine festival in Tasmania. It's the biggest one in the state! This festival started way back in 1988. It happens every year from December 28th to January 3rd. In 2022, it celebrated its 32nd birthday! You can find it in Hobart, right by the water at Salamanca Place. The local government, called the City of Hobart, used to organize this big event.

A Look Back at the Festival

How Funding Changed

In 2019, the local council, which is like the city's government, decided to give less money to the festival. They agreed to a plan to give $3 million over three years. This meant $1.1 million in 2019-20, $1 million in 2020-21, and $900,000 for 2021-22.

To make up for the money the council no longer provided, the state government gave more help. This extra money also helped pay for using the festival's main spot, Princes Wharf No1.

Festival Pauses and Changes

The festival couldn't happen in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia. It also didn't take place in 2021.

Then, in May 2021, the Hobart City Council voted to stop being in charge of the festival. This meant someone else would need to run it in the future.

What the Festival is All About

Celebrating Tasmanian Produce

The Taste of Tasmania loves to show off food and drinks made right there in Tasmania. They try to use as much local produce as possible. It's a great way to taste what Tasmania has to offer!

A Big Event for Visitors

Lots of people come to the festival! About 500,000 visitors come each year during the one-week event. That's a huge crowd!

Combining Fun and Food

The Taste of Tasmania is actually two big events rolled into one: The Taste of Tasmania and the Hobart Summer Festival. It happens right after the famous Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. Many tourists come to Hobart for the race, and then they can enjoy the festival too!

The festival takes advantage of Hobart's warm summer weather, beautiful waterfront, and long sunny days. It's the perfect time to show off the best of Tasmanian food, art, crafts, and fun entertainment.
