About the Tataskweyak Cree Nation
The Tataskweyak Cree Nation is a self-governing group of Cree people. In Canada, a First Nation is one of the many Indigenous groups. They have their own leaders and make decisions for their community. The Tataskweyak Cree Nation is part of the larger Cree people, who are one of the biggest groups of Indigenous people in North America.
Where They Live
The main land set aside for the Tataskweyak Cree Nation is called Split Lake 171. This land is known as a reserve in Canada. A reserve is a special area of land that the Canadian government holds for the use of a First Nation. The Tataskweyak Cree Nation also has two other smaller reserves: Split Lake 171A and Split Lake 171B.
Important Agreements
The Tataskweyak Cree Nation has signed an important agreement with Manitoba Hydro. Manitoba Hydro is a company that creates electricity, mostly using the power of water (this is called hydroelectric power). This agreement is about possible new hydroelectric projects at a place called Keeyask Rapids. These projects would use the flow of the Nelson River to make electricity. Agreements like this are important because they affect the land and the people living there.
Their Government and People
The Tataskweyak Cree Nation has its own band government. This means they have elected leaders who manage the community's affairs, like education, health, and local services. They are also part of the Keewatin Tribal Council. A tribal council is a group of several First Nations that work together to share resources and support each other.
As of 2016, there were 2,044 members of the Tataskweyak Cree Nation living on their reserve lands. In total, the Nation had 3,711 members. This shows that some members live on the reserve, while others live in different places.
