Who is Tatia Rosenthal?

Tatia Rosenthal was born on April 4, 1971, in Tel Aviv, Israel. Before becoming a filmmaker, she explored different paths. She spent two years serving in the Israeli Defense Force. After that, she even tried studying at medical school for a while. Her journey then took her to Paris, France, where she studied photography.

Moving to New York City

Eventually, Tatia moved to New York City in the United States. There, she attended the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University (NYU). This is where she focused on film and animation. Today, Tatia works as a freelance director and animator, creating films from New York.

Her Creative Work

Tatia Rosenthal is well-known for working with the Israeli author Etgar Keret. She has turned several of his short stories into animated films.

Early Films at NYU

While she was a student at NYU, Tatia created an award-winning short film called Crazy Glue (1998). This film was based on one of Etgar Keret's stories. It showed her skill in animation and storytelling early on.

A Buck's Worth and $9.99

In 2005, Tatia directed another short film called A Buck's Worth. This film also came from a story by Etgar Keret. A Buck's Worth was a stop-motion animation. Stop-motion is a special way of making animated films where objects are moved in small steps between individually photographed frames. When the frames are played quickly, it looks like the objects are moving on their own.

A Buck's Worth was very important because it was used as a proof of concept for a bigger movie. A "proof of concept" is like a small test project that shows an idea can work before a lot of money is spent on a larger project. In this case, it showed that a full-length movie using the same style could be made.

The success of A Buck's Worth led to the feature film $9.99. Tatia Rosenthal directed this movie, which also used stop-motion animation and was based on Keret's stories. For her directing work on $9.99, she received an Annie Award nomination. The Annie Awards celebrate achievements in animation, so this was a big honor!
