Tawi River facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Tawi is a river that flows through the city of Jammu in Kashmir. It's a very important river for the people living there.

The Tawi River is a big branch, also called a tributary, of the Chenab River. This means the Tawi River flows into the Chenab River.

Where the Tawi River Starts

The Tawi River begins high up in the mountains. It starts from the Kali Kundi glacier and the areas around it, which are found southwest of Bhadarwah in the Doda District. Imagine it as melting ice and snow from the glacier forming tiny streams that grow into a river!

The Tawi River's Journey

The Tawi River travels for about 141 kilometers (that's about 87 miles). For most of its journey, it flows through steep hills on both sides. But as it gets closer to the city of Jammu, the land becomes flatter for about 35 kilometers.

When the river reaches Jammu, it becomes quite wide. At the main bridge in Jammu, the river is about 300 meters (almost 1,000 feet) across! The area where all the rain and snow collect to feed the Tawi River covers a large space, including parts of the Jammu, Udhampur, and Doda districts. The land in this area goes from being fairly low (around 400 meters high) to very high in the mountains (up to 4,000 meters high).
