Taylor Provisions is a company based in Trenton, New Jersey. They are well-known for making a special food called pork roll. The person who started the company, John Taylor, is believed to have invented pork roll. He first called it "Taylor's Prepared Ham." Even though the company doesn't call it "ham" anymore, many people still use the nickname "Taylor Ham."

What is Pork Roll?

Taylor Provisions mainly makes products from pork. Their most famous product is pork roll, which is a type of processed pork. It first came from New Jersey. Some pork roll is still sold in a special cloth wrapper, much like a traditional sausage.

How the Company Started

The Invention of Pork Roll

John Taylor created his special recipe for pork roll in 1856. This was the beginning of a popular food item.

Forming the Company

In 1888, John Taylor and his son, William, officially started the Taylor Provision Company. The company quickly became very important to the city of Trenton. By 1894, they were making a lot of money from their sales.

Changing the Name

John Taylor first sold his product as "Taylor's Prepared Ham." However, a new law called the Pure Food and Drug Act was passed in 1906. This law set new rules for what could be called "ham." Taylor's product did not meet these new rules, so the company had to change its name. This is why it became known as "pork roll." Other companies also started making similar products, calling them "Rolled Pork" or "Trenton style Pork Roll."

Shops and Location

During the 1950s, Taylor Provisions had many sandwich shops along the Jersey Shore. They had eight shops in total, including some in popular places like Atlantic City and Cape May. The last of these shops, located in Cape May, closed in the early 1980s when its owner retired. Today, the company still operates from Perrine Avenue in Trenton, New Jersey.
