Taylorville was once a small town in Marin County, California. It was located about 11 miles (18 km) west-southwest of downtown Novato. The town sat at an elevation of 141 feet (43 meters) above sea level. Taylorville could still be found on maps as late as 1914.

What Was Taylorville?

Taylorville was more than just a quiet settlement. It had a post office, which helped people send and receive mail. There was also a tannery, where animal hides were turned into leather.

Early Industries

The town was home to a gunpowder factory. This factory made gunpowder, which was used for various purposes at the time. Taylorville also had a paper mill. This mill first used water power to make paper. Later, it switched to a steam engine, which was a more modern way to power the machinery.

A Popular Getaway

Besides its industries, Taylorville was a lively spot for visitors. Cap Taylor, who owned property there, created a fun resort. It featured a hotel, a dance hall, and even two bowling alleys. People could also enjoy boating on the nearby creek. Hunting and fishing were popular activities too. On busy weekends, as many as 3,000 people would visit Taylorville.

Train Service

Trains played a big role in Taylorville's history. The town was connected by the Northwestern Pacific Railroad. This train service helped transport goods and people to and from Taylorville. Trains served the area from 1875 until 1933.

Who Was Samuel P. Taylor?

The name Taylorville honors a very important person: Samuel Penfield Taylor. He was the founder of the first paper mill on the West Coast of the United States. His mill was a major part of Taylorville's early success.
