The Story of Tchibo
How Tchibo Started
Tchibo was started in 1949 in Hamburg, Germany. The founders were Max Herz and Carl Tchilinghiryan. The company's main office is still in Hamburg today. The name "Tchibo" comes from "Tchiling" (from Carl Tchilinghiryan) and "Bohnen," which means "coffee beans" in German.
When Tchibo first began, they focused on selling fresh coffee beans by mail. They roasted these beans in their own facility in Hamburg.
Growing the Business
Tchibo grew quite a bit over the years. In 1997, they bought another coffee company called Eduscho. This made Tchibo the biggest coffee seller in Germany.
In the 1990s, Tchibo started opening stores outside of Germany. They now have shops in countries like Switzerland, Austria, Poland, and Turkey. They also tried to sell a video game console called Tele-Fever in 1986, but it did not sell many units.
Tchibo also sold its cigarette brand, Davidoff, in 2006. However, they kept the rights to the "Davidoff café" brand. They started selling "Davidoff café" in the United States.
Changes and New Directions
In 2007, Tchibo announced a plan to help the business grow again. They made some changes to their company structure.
In the United Kingdom, Tchibo decided to close many of its stores. They also changed how their main office worked there. By the end of 2009, all Tchibo stores in the UK had closed. Their UK online shop also closed in 2010.
However, a new Tchibo online shop for the UK opened in 2016. In the same year, Tchibo bought a coffee roasting company in Scotland called Matthew Algie.
How Tchibo is Organized
Tchibo is owned by a company called Maxingvest AG. This company changed its name from Tchibo Holding AG in 2007. Three members of the Herz family own Maxingvest AG. These are Ingeburg Herz (Max Herz's wife) and her two sons, Michael Herz and Wolfgang Herz.
In 2002, Tchibo had 850 shops. They also had 22,000 "Frische-Depots" (freshness depots) in bakeries and supermarkets. These spots sold packaged coffee and other items like clothes and household goods.
