Tchibo's Story
How Tchibo Started
Tchibo was started in 1949 in Hamburg, Germany. The founders were Max Herz and Carl Tchilinghiryan. The company's main office is still in Hamburg today. The name "Tchibo" comes from "Tchiling" (from Carl Tchilinghiryan's name) and the German word "Bohnen," which means coffee beans.
When it first started, Tchibo focused on selling fresh coffee beans by mail. They roasted their own coffee beans in their facility in Hamburg.
Growing Bigger
Over the years, Tchibo grew a lot. In 1997, Tchibo bought another coffee company called Eduscho. This made Tchibo the top coffee seller in Germany.
In the 1990s, Tchibo began to open stores outside of Germany. Today, you can find Tchibo shops in many European countries. These include Switzerland, Austria, Poland, and Turkey. Tchibo also sells its coffee and coffee makers online in the United States.
Tchibo also owns the rights to the "Davidoff café" brand. They have started selling this coffee brand in the US as well.
Changes and Challenges
In 2007, Tchibo planned some changes to help the company grow. In the United Kingdom, Tchibo decided to close many of its stores. They also changed how their main office worked there.
By 2009, Tchibo decided to leave the UK market completely. All their stores in the UK closed by the end of October 2009. Their UK online store also closed in 2010. However, a new Tchibo online shop for the UK was launched in 2016. In 2016, Tchibo also bought a coffee roasting company in Scotland called Matthew Algie.
Who Owns Tchibo?
Tchibo is owned by a company called Maxingvest AG. This company is fully owned by three members of the Herz family. They are Ingeburg Herz and her two sons, Michael Herz and Wolfgang Herz.
In 2002, Tchibo had 850 stores. They also had 22,000 "Frische-Depots" in bakeries and supermarkets. These are special shelves where Tchibo sells packaged coffee and other items. These items can include clothes, accessories, and things for sports or your home.
