Te Rā / Dagg Sound is a long, narrow inlet of the sea, called a fiord. You can find it in Fiordland, New Zealand. It's located south of Doubtful Sound and north of Te Puaitaha / Breaksea Sound. Many whales like to visit the waters just outside the fiord's entrance. This area is special because the ocean floor suddenly drops very deep, thousands of metres down!

About Te Rā / Dagg Sound

Tall, steep cliffs surround this fiord, which stretches inland for about 13 km (8.1 mi) (around 8 miles). A part of the fiord called Anchorage Arm branches off to the north. At the eastern end of the fiord, there's a short path, about 1.5 km (0.93 mi) (less than a mile) long, that connects to Crooked Arm in Doubtful Sound.

How it got its name

The fiord was first named Dagg Sound after the captain of a whaling boat called Scorpion. He visited the area in 1804. In October 2019, the fiord's name was officially changed to Te Rā / Dagg Sound.
