History of the Princess Theatre
Building and Early Years
The theatre was designed by an architect named Jose Zacarias Camaña. It first opened its doors in 1853. Imagine, that's over 170 years ago! It quickly became an important part of Valencia's cultural scene.
Name Changes and Updates
During a big historical event called the Spanish Civil War, the theatre's name was changed to Teatro Libertad. This change happened because of the political situation at the time. After the war, it went back to being called Teatro Princesa. Later, in 1956, the theatre was updated and remodeled by Miguel Sanchis to make it even better for visitors.
A Sad Event
On January 30, 1982, something very sad happened at the theatre. An actor named Lluís Nonell was performing in a play called El diluvio que viene. During the show, he suddenly passed away from a heart problem. This was a very shocking moment for everyone there.
The Theatre's Final Years
By 1990, the beautiful Teatro Princesa was no longer in use and became empty. In October 1999, some people who didn't have a permanent home started living inside the abandoned building. These people are sometimes called squatters. However, the police, known as the Policía Nacional, later asked them to leave. Sadly, on February 27, 2009, a big fire completely destroyed the old theatre building. Now, only memories remain of the once grand Teatro Princesa.
