Teatro Segura facts for kids
The Manuel Segura Theater is a very old and famous theater in Lima, Peru. You can find it on a street called Jirón Huancavelica. It first opened its doors way back in 1615, making it the oldest theater in all of Latin America! It's a special place where people have enjoyed plays and concerts for hundreds of years.
A Long History
The story of the Manuel Segura Theater began in 1615. Back then, it was an open-air theater, like a courtyard where shows were performed. People called these "Corral de comedias."
Sadly, a big earthquake in 1746 destroyed the original building. But people loved their theater, so it was rebuilt just one year later! Over the years, the theater was updated and improved in 1822 and again in 1874.
The building you see today was built in 1909. When it first opened, it was called the "Teatro Municipal." Later, in 1929, its name was changed to "Teatro Manuel Ascencio Segura." This happened after another theater, the Teatro Municipal de Lima, was bought by the city of Lima. The new name honors Manuel Ascencio Segura, a very important Peruvian writer of plays.
What You Can See There
Today, the Manuel Segura Theater is still a busy place. It hosts many different kinds of shows. You can go there to see plays, listen to concerts, and enjoy other live performances. It's a great spot to experience the arts and culture of Lima.
