Tecamachalco, Naucalpan facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Tecamachalco is a well-known neighborhood in the State of Mexico, near Mexico City. It's officially called Lomas de Tecamachalco and is part of the city of Naucalpan. This area is located across two different local government areas: Naucalpan and Huixquilucan municipalities.

Where is Tecamachalco?

Tecamachalco is found along two main streets: Avenida de los Bosques and Avenida de las Fuentes. It's surrounded by several other interesting places:

  • To the southwest, you'll find Universidad Anahuac, a university, and the Interlomas area, which is known for its modern buildings.
  • To the northeast, there are neighborhoods like Lomas Hipódromo. Right across the border, in Mexico City, is the Hipódromo de las Américas, a famous horse racing track.
  • To the southeast, it borders Bosques de las Lomas, another neighborhood in Mexico City.
  • To the northwest, you'll see Lomas Anahuac and La Herradura, which are also part of Naucalpan.

Even though Tecamachalco is mostly a place where people live, it has a small shopping area. Here, people can find stores and buy things they need.

People of Tecamachalco

About 3,300 families call Tecamachalco home. Many older people live in this neighborhood. A special part of Tecamachalco is its large Jewish community, making up about 40% of the residents.

The Jewish Community

The spot where Avenida de las Fuentes and Fuente de la Templanza meet is sometimes called "Little Tel Aviv" by the people who live there. This is because of the strong Jewish presence. On Friday evenings or Saturday mornings, many Jewish residents walk to their temples for religious services. Some men wear special hats, and some women wear wigs as part of their traditions.

You can find many unique Jewish shops in Tecamachalco:

  • The "Kosher Palace" store plays Israeli music and sells many items from Israel. These include spices, a sweet treat called halva, Israeli chocolate spread, and New York pretzels. They also have large jars of pickles, frozen schnitzel, falafel, and many other kosher foods. Kosher means the food follows special Jewish dietary rules.
  • The Shuky Centre is a big building with different floors for kosher food. It has separate areas for meat and milk products, which is important for kosher rules. You can buy foods like shawarma, sushi, kosher Mexican food, Syrian lavash bread, kosher chickens, and challot (a special braided bread).
  • Other Jewish-owned businesses include the Sinai Deli and Bakery, Sastreria Saul (a tailor shop), butcher shops, and kosher taquerias (places selling tacos).

The neighborhood also has Jewish schools and at least six synagogues or temples. These places of worship are often unmarked, blending in with the other buildings.
