A Look Back: History of the Mine

The Techatticup Mine was super important! It was the biggest and most successful mine in the whole Colorado Mining District. Back then, two mining towns, Alturas and Louisville, grew up right near the mine. They were located halfway down the canyon.

What You Can See Today

Today, the Techatticup Mine is a fun place to explore. It has been cleaned up and lit with lights, so you can easily walk through it. You can take a guided tour to see inside the mine.

As you walk, you'll see lots of old mining tools and machines. A special part of the tour shows you a cool example of drift mining. This is where miners dug a long, deep tunnel downwards from the top of the mountain. They followed a vein of gold ore deep inside the rock.
