Frank Theodore "Ted" Levine (born May 29, 1957) is an American actor. He is famous for playing many different characters in movies and on TV. Many people know him as the tough but fair Captain Leland Stottlemeyer in the popular TV series Monk.

Ted Levine was born in Bellaire, Ohio. His parents, Charlotte and Milton Levine, were both doctors. His father had a Russian-Jewish background, and his mother had Welsh and Native American roots.
Levine grew up in Oak Park, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. After high school, he went to Marlboro College in Vermont in 1975 to continue his studies.
Acting Career
Levine began his acting career in the theater. He was an active member of the Chicago theatre scene and joined the Remains Theatre. This experience on stage helped him build his skills as an actor. In the 1980s, he started focusing more on getting roles in movies and television shows.
Breakthrough and Famous Roles
Levine's big break came in 1991 when he played the main villain, Jame Gumb, in the movie The Silence of the Lambs. His performance was so convincing that for a while, he was often offered similar roles as villains. This is known as being "typecast."
