Frank Theodore "Ted" Levine (born May 29, 1957) is an American actor. He is famous for playing many different characters in movies and on TV. Many people know him as the tough but fair Captain Leland Stottlemeyer in the popular TV series Monk.

He is also well-known for playing the memorable villain Jame Gumb, also known as Buffalo Bill, in the movie The Silence of the Lambs (1991). Over his long career, Levine has appeared in many other famous films. These include The Fast and the Furious (2001), Shutter Island (2010), and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018).

Early Life and Education

Ted Levine was born in Bellaire, Ohio. His parents, Charlotte and Milton Levine, were both doctors. His father had a Russian-Jewish background, and his mother had Welsh and Native American roots.

Levine grew up in Oak Park, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. After high school, he went to Marlboro College in Vermont in 1975 to continue his studies.

Acting Career

Levine began his acting career in the theater. He was an active member of the Chicago theatre scene and joined the Remains Theatre. This experience on stage helped him build his skills as an actor. In the 1980s, he started focusing more on getting roles in movies and television shows.

Breakthrough and Famous Roles

Levine's big break came in 1991 when he played the main villain, Jame Gumb, in the movie The Silence of the Lambs. His performance was so convincing that for a while, he was often offered similar roles as villains. This is known as being "typecast."

However, Levine showed his acting range by taking on many different kinds of roles. He played a police officer in the action movie Heat and astronaut Alan Shepard in the TV miniseries From the Earth to the Moon.

Success on Television

From 2002 to 2009, Levine became a familiar face on television as Captain Leland Stottlemeyer in the detective series Monk. He starred alongside Tony Shalhoub, playing the supportive but often frustrated boss of the main character.

He also had a major role in the crime series The Bridge as Lieutenant Hank Wade. More recently, he appeared in the drama Big Sky as Horst Kleinsasser.

Movie and Voice Work

Throughout his career, Levine has appeared in many major films. He was a police sergeant in The Fast and the Furious and the warden of a prison on a mysterious island in Shutter Island. In 2018, he played the hunter Ken Wheatley in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Levine is also a talented voice actor. He provided the voice for the supervillain Sinestro in several animated shows from the DC Animated Universe, including Superman: The Animated Series and Justice League.

Personal Life

Ted Levine has two children, a son and a daughter.

Awards and Recognition

Ted Levine's work has been recognized by the acting community. In 2008, he and the other actors in the movie American Gangster were nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. In 2015, he won the Best Actor award at the Beaufort International Film Festival for his role in the movie Dig Two Graves.
