Theodore McClain, born on August 30, 1946, is a former professional basketball player from the United States. He was a guard, standing 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighing 180 pounds. Ted played professional basketball for eight seasons, from 1971 to 1979, in two major leagues: the American Basketball Association (ABA) and the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Ted McClain's College Basketball Career

During his time at Tennessee State University, Ted was a star player. In 1970, he was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 1970 NCAA College Division basketball tournament. His team, Tennessee State, made it all the way to the finals but lost to Philadelphia University.

Starting His Professional Journey

In 1971, Ted McClain was chosen in two different basketball drafts. The Atlanta Hawks picked him in the second round of the 1971 NBA draft. In the same year, the Carolina Cougars selected him in the ABA Draft. Ted decided to start his professional career with the Carolina Cougars in the ABA.

Playing in the ABA and NBA

Ted McClain played for several teams during his career. In the ABA, he played for the Carolina Cougars, Kentucky Colonels, and New York Nets. When the ABA merged with the NBA, he then played for NBA teams like the Denver Nuggets, Buffalo Braves, Philadelphia 76ers, and Phoenix Suns.

Throughout his career, Ted McClain was known for his skills on the court. He averaged 8.4 points per game and 3.4 assists per game. He was also chosen to play in the 1974 ABA All-Star Game, which is a special game featuring the best players from the league.

Ted holds an impressive ABA record: he made 12 steals in a single game. This happened on December 26, 1973, when his team played against the New York Nets. This shows how good he was at taking the ball away from opponents!
