Ted van Lieshout was born on December 21, 1955. He is a famous Dutch poet and writer. He writes many books for children and young people. Ted van Lieshout has won many important awards for his work.
Ted's Early Life
Ted van Lieshout was born in 1955 in a city called Eindhoven in the Netherlands. He went to art school in Amsterdam from 1975 to 1980. It was called the Gerrit Rietveld Academie.
After art school, Ted started drawing for newspapers. He also drew for magazines like NRC Handelsblad and Avenue. He even helped with popular TV shows. These included Het Klokhuis and Sesamstraat. In 1990, he decided to become a full-time writer.
Ted's Writing Career
Ted van Lieshout has written many books that kids love. In 1995, he won a very special award called the Gouden Griffel. He won it for his poetry book, Begin een torentje van niks. This was the first time this award was given for a book of poems!
He also won the Zilveren Zoen for his book Gebr.. This book was so good that it was translated into many languages. It even won an award in Germany in 1999. The German version was called Bruder.
In 2001, Ted won the Nienke van Hichtum-prijs for his book Zeer kleine liefde. Later, in 2009, he received the Theo Thijssen-prijs. This award honored all the amazing books he had written up to that point.
Ted won the Woutertje Pieterse Prijs in 2012 for his book Driedeling paard. He was also nominated for this award two more times. He received the Zilveren Griffel award for another book called Onder mijn matras de erwt.
Ted van Lieshout was even a finalist for the big international Hans Christian Andersen Award twice!
Many artists have drawn pictures for Ted's children's books. Some of these artists are Annemarie van Haeringen and Daan Remmerts de Vries. Ted also draws pictures for many of his own books. Since 2012, he has worked with Philip Hopman. Together, they create the popular 'Boer Boris ' picture books. These books are about a little farmer boy.
