Tekena Nitonye Tamuno (born January 28, 1932 – died April 11, 2015) was a famous Nigerian historian. He was also a very important leader at the University of Ibadan, where he served as the Vice-Chancellor. This role is like being the president of a university. He also led the Board of Trustees for Bells University of Technology.
Life and Education
Tekena Tamuno was born in Okrika, Nigeria. He started his education at St Peter's School in his hometown. After that, he went to Okrika Grammar School.
He loved history! From 1953 to 1958, he studied history at the University of Ibadan. Later, in 1960, he traveled to London and New York to continue his studies. He attended Birkbeck, University of London and Columbia University.
Career at University of Ibadan
In 1962, Tekena Tamuno returned to the University of Ibadan. He joined the History Department there. He spent most of his career at this university.
He was not just a teacher; he also held many important leadership roles. He became a professor emeritus, which means he was a highly respected professor who had retired but still kept his title.
