Tello Alfonso of Castile (born 1337, died October 1370) was an important figure in the history of Castile, a kingdom in what is now Spain. He was one of the ten children of King Alfonso XI of Castile and Eleanor of Guzman. Tello was known as a prince of Castile and the First Lord of Aguilar de Campoo.

In Spanish, he was called Tello de Castilla, Infante de Castilla. This means "Tello of Castile, Prince of Castile." He also held titles like Lord of Aguilar de Campoo, Vizcaya, Castañeda, and Lara.

Tello's Early Life and Role

Tello Alfonso was born in the city of Seville. As he grew up, he became involved in the political struggles of his time.

He joined his brothers in opposing the rule of their half-brother, Pedro of Castile. Pedro was also known as Pedro the Cruel because of his harsh ways. These were difficult times for the royal family and the kingdom.

Tello's Family and Children

In 1353, Tello Alfonso married Juana of Lara. Juana was the daughter of a powerful noble, Juan Núñez III de Lara.

Sadly, Juana reportedly died in 1359. It is said that her death happened under the orders of King Pedro. Tello and Juana did not have any children together.

It was also reported that Tello kept the news of her death a secret for some time. This was so he could keep control of her dowry, which was the property or money she brought into the marriage.

Tello Alfonso had many children outside of his marriage. These are some of them:

  • Juan Tellez de Castilla (1355-1385): He became the Second Lord of Aguilar de Campoo. Juan died in the Battle of Aljubarrota. His marriage helped create the family line of the Marquesses of Aguilar de Campoo, who were very important nobles in Spain.
  • Afonso Tellez de Castilla: Born in 1365.
  • Pedro Enríquez de Castilla: Born in 1370, he was the Lord of Camporredondo.
  • Fernando Tellez de Castilla
  • Constanza Tellez de Castilla
  • Maria Tellez de Castilla
  • Isabel Tellez de Castilla
  • Juana Tellez de Castilla
  • Leonor Tellez de Castilla
