Discover the Amable Maria Frog

The Amable Maria frog is a semiaquatic animal. This means it spends part of its life in water and part on land. It is also endemic to a specific area. This means it is found only in one place in the world. For the Amable Maria frog, that place is central Peru.

Home of the Amable Maria Frog

This frog loves water, but it doesn't live in big lakes. Instead, it lives near small rivers and streams that flow into Lake Junín in central Peru. These areas are very high up, between 4,000 and 4,600 meters (about 13,123 to 15,092 feet) above sea level. That's higher than many mountains!

Size of the Amable Maria Frog

The Amable Maria frog is a fairly large frog. It typically measures between 5.8 and 7.3 centimeters (about 2.3 to 2.9 inches) from its snout to its rear end. It usually weighs between 25 and 55 grams (about 0.9 to 1.9 ounces). Even though it's quite big, it's still smaller than its close relative, the Lake Junin frog (T. macrostomus). Both of these frogs are also endangered. Sometimes, these two frog species are placed in a different group called Batrachophrynus.

Why the Amable Maria Frog is Endangered

The main reason the Amable Maria frog is endangered is because people catch it. It is caught for human consumption, meaning it is eaten by people. This practice reduces the number of frogs in the wild, making it harder for the species to survive. Protecting their habitat and stopping over-collection are important steps to help these frogs.
