Tenkiller is in the southeastern part of Cherokee County. It is near other small communities. To the north is Welling. Across the Illinois River to the west are Park Hill and Keys. Rocky Mountain is to the east. The community of Dry Creek is a short distance south. Tahlequah, the main town of the county, is about 13 miles (21 km) northwest.
This area covers about 16.42 square miles (42.54 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. About 0.76 square miles (1.96 square kilometers), or 5.23%, is water. A large lake, Tenkiller Ferry Lake, is on the western side. It is part of the Illinois River.
