Tennis and Racquet Club facts for kids
The Tennis and Racquet Club is a special kind of private club in Boston, Massachusetts. It's a place where people can meet socially and play sports. You can find it at 939 Boylston Street, in an area called Back Bay. This building is an important part of a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The club's building was designed by a team called Parker and Thomas. They used a style called classical revival, which means it looks like old Greek and Roman buildings. It was built in 1902 by Frank L. Whitcomb. The Tennis and Racquet Club shows what fancy private clubs looked like in Boston a long time ago.
What Sports Can You Play?
The club has some very old and unique sports courts. It still has its original real tennis court and a racquets court. Real tennis is an older version of the game we usually call tennis today.
Today, the club also has six squash courts. Three of these are for international games, and three are for North American games. In the past, there were even more courts, including one for squash tennis. The club is one of only nine places in the entire United States where you can play real tennis. Some of the original social rooms, where members used to relax, are now rented out as offices or restaurants.
