Ter (department) facts for kids
Ter was a special area, like a region or state, that was part of the First French Empire in the early 1800s. This empire was led by Napoleon, and it controlled many parts of Europe. Ter was located in what is now Spain, specifically in the area called Catalonia. It was named after the Ter River, which flows through that region.
A French Region in Spain
The Ter region was officially created on January 26, 1812. This happened when the French Empire took control of Catalonia. Think of a department as a way to organize land, similar to how a state or province works today.
- Capital City: The main city, or capital, of Ter was Girona.
- Other Important Towns: Other key towns in the department were Vic and Figueres. These were called "subprefectures."
- The Leader: The person in charge of the Ter department was called a "prefect." The only prefect for Ter was Prudence-Guillaume de Roujoux. He was in charge from February 1812 until 1813. A prefect was like a governor, making sure the area followed the rules of the French Empire.
What Happened to Ter?
The Ter department did not last for very long.
- Merging Departments: In March 1813, Ter was combined with another department called Sègre. Together, they formed a new, larger department named Ter-et-Sègre.
- A Bit Confusing: This merger was decided by a special order, but it was never fully announced in the official government newspaper. This made its legal status a bit unclear. It was like a rule that was made but never fully written down and shared with everyone.
- The End of the Departments: By 1814, the French army left the Iberian Peninsula (which includes Spain and Portugal). They had been there since 1807. When the French left, these departments, including Ter, stopped existing.
