He later studied medicine at two different places. First, he attended the Fiji School of Medicine. After that, he continued his studies at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. He became a medical doctor.
Career in Medicine
After finishing his medical training, Sir Terepai worked as a doctor. He helped many people with their health. In 1976, he became the Director of Clinical Services. This was a big role in the Ministry of Health. It meant he was in charge of medical services across the country.
Entering Politics

Serving as Minister
Once in Parliament, he quickly took on important roles. He became a Minister in the government. He was the Minister of Health and Agriculture. This meant he helped make decisions about healthcare and farming. From 1985 to 1989, he also served as the Deputy Prime Minister. This is a very high position in the government.
Becoming Prime Minister
In 1998, Sir Terepai became the leader of the Democratic Party. This also made him the Leader of the Opposition. The opposition party works to challenge the government.
After the 1999 election, no single party won enough seats to form a government easily. This is called a hung Parliament. After some agreements between different groups, Sir Terepai Maoate became the Prime Minister. He held this top leadership role from November 1999 to February 2002.
Changes in Leadership
In February 2002, Sir Terepai was replaced as Prime Minister. His former Deputy Prime Minister, Robert Woonton, took over the role. After this, Sir Terepai became the Leader of the Opposition again.
Later Political Roles
