Ramiro III de León
Teresa's son Ramiro III of León

Teresa Ansúrez was an important woman in the history of the Kingdom of León. She was the wife of King Sancho I of León, which means she was a Queen consort. Because of her marriage, she is also known as Teresa of Leon. After her husband died, she became a regent for her young son, Ramiro III, from 975 to 979. A regent is someone who rules a country when the king or queen is too young or unable to rule themselves. Teresa passed away in the year 997.

Becoming Queen of León

Teresa was born into a noble family. Her father was a nobleman named Ansur Fernández, and her mother was Gontroda Nuñez. She also had a brother, Fernando Ansúrez II. Teresa married Sancho I of León, who was the king. Together, they had two children: a son named Ramiro III of León, who later became king, and a daughter named Urraca Sánchez.

Teresa's Time as Regent

When King Sancho I died, Teresa was sent to live in a convent. Her son, Ramiro, was still very young. So, his aunt, Elvira Ramírez, became his regent. She was in charge of the kingdom until Ramiro was old enough to rule.

However, things changed in 975. Elvira Ramírez and her allies faced a big military defeat at a place called Gormaz. After this loss, Elvira had to step down from her role in the government. That's when Teresa Ansúrez took over as regent. She ruled the kingdom for her son until he became an adult and could rule on his own.
