Teresa Pàmies Bertran (born October 8, 1919 – died March 13, 2012) was an important Spanish writer. She wrote her books in the Catalan language.

Teresa was a leader in the Unified Socialist Youth of Catalonia [ca] in 1937. This was a youth group linked to a political party. She also helped start the National Alliance of the Young Woman between 1937 and 1939.

She was married to Gregorio López Raimundo [ca], who was a main leader of the Unified Socialist Party of Catalonia (PSUC). Her son, Sergi Pàmies, also became a writer.

Teresa Pàmies wrote many books that shared her own life experiences. Some of her well-known works include Testament a Praga (1970) and Jardí enfonsat (1992). She received many awards for her writing. These include the Creu de Sant Jordi in 1984 and the Premi d'Honor de les Lletres Catalanes in 2001.

Teresa Pàmies' Early Life and Activism

Teresa Pàmies was born in Balaguer, Spain, in 1919. Her father, Tomàs Pàmies [ca], was a local leader of a political group called the Workers and Peasants' Bloc.

From a young age, Teresa was involved in politics. When she was just 10 years old, she helped sell her father's group's weekly newspaper. At 17, when the Spanish Civil War began, she spoke at a large meeting in Barcelona.

In 1937, she joined the Unified Socialist Youth of Catalonia [ca] (JSUC). She quickly became a leader in this group. She also helped create the National Alliance of Dona Jove. This group was active from 1937 to 1939. Teresa also wrote for a newspaper called Juliol.

Life in Exile: A Journey Through Europe and Beyond

After the Republican side lost the Civil War, Teresa had to leave Spain. She went into exile with her father, leaving her mother and brothers behind. She never forgot the difficult journey, especially seeing wounded people from a Barcelona hospital.

She was one of about half a million people who fled from Catalonia to France. Her journey took her through Girona and Olot. When she was 19, she arrived at a refugee camp in Magnac-Laval, near Limoges, France.

At the camp, Teresa helped organize the people living there. She also helped set up a school. With help from her political party, she managed to leave the camp. Before Germany took over Paris, she was held in a prison for three months. This was because she was an illegal immigrant.

After being released, she went to Bordeaux. From there, she traveled with other Spanish Republicans to the Dominican Republic. She then moved to Cuba. While in Cuba, she learned that President Lluís Companys had been executed.

From Cuba, Teresa traveled to Mexico. She lived there for eight years and studied journalism. In 1947, she was able to return to Europe. She worked for one year at Radio Belgrade. Then, she spent twelve years in Czechoslovakia. There, she worked as an editor for the Catalan and Spanish radio shows at Radio Prague. Even while in exile, she wrote for Catalan magazines like Serra d'Or.

Return to Catalonia and Later Life

In 1971, Teresa Pàmies was able to return to Catalonia, Spain. She received a special visa to come back and accept the Josep Pla Award. She won this award for her book Testament a Praga, which she wrote with her father.

Teresa Pàmies passed away on March 13, 2012. She was 92 years old and died at her son Antonio's home in Granada, Spain.
