María Teresa Táboas Veleiro (born in 1961 in Mexico City, Mexico) is a talented architect, a university professor, and a politician from Galicia, Spain. She has played an important role in the Galician government, serving as a minister for housing and property from 2005 to 2009. Later, she became a member of the Galician Parliament until February 2012.
Her Early Life and Career
Teresa Táboas was born in Mexico City to Spanish parents who had moved there from O Carballiño and Beariz in Spain. She is the oldest of four children in her family.
After finishing her early education, she decided to study architecture. She was lucky to have Luis Barragán, a very famous architect, as one of her mentors. She earned her degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
After her studies, Teresa moved back to Spain. She worked for six years at the architecture firm of César Portela. She also spent two years working for the local government in Marín.
She continued her education and earned a doctorate, which is a very high university degree. Her special research paper, called a thesis, was about "The Colour in Architecture." She received a top grade for her work.
In 1990, Teresa Táboas started her own architecture company called "Teresa Táboas Estudio de Arquitectura." Through her company, she has worked on many different building and city planning projects.
Leadership in Architecture and Politics
From 1999 to 2003, Teresa Táboas was the President of the Pontevedra branch of the Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de Galicia (Official College of Architects of Galicia). On May 15, 2003, she made history by becoming the first woman to be the Dean and President of COAG.
She also became a consultant for the Superior Council of Spanish Architects. She was only the second woman to hold this important position since the council was created in 1931.
Teresa Táboas has also been part of important groups that advise on sustainable architecture and city planning. These groups are part of the European Parliament's Architect commission. She represented the Superior Council of Spanish Architects in these discussions.
In 2006, she received a gold medal from the University of Anáhuac for her impressive career. Since 2012, she has been the president of the Housing Committee of the European Architect Council.
Teresa Táboas is a mother to two sons.
