History of Terlton
The community of Terlton began to form after the Cherokee Outlet opening on September 16, 1893. This was a time when land in Oklahoma was opened for people to claim and settle.
Early Days and Growth
A post office was set up in Terlton on November 30, 1894. The town was named after Ira N. Terrell, who was a member of the first government group for the area.
Around 1902-1903, the Arkansas Valley and Western Railway built a railroad through the town. This helped Terlton become a busy place for local farmers to trade their goods.
Oil and Industry
Oil was found near Terlton around 1914. This led to new businesses like pipelines and oil storage areas. These oil-related jobs supported the town until the 1930s.
In more recent years, Terlton has become a commuter town. This means many people who live there travel to other places for work.
Important Events
On April 26, 1984, a very strong tornado hit Terlton at night. Three people sadly lost their lives, and over 30 people were hurt. This happened on the same night another tornado hit Morris, Oklahoma, about 60 miles away.
In 1985, there was an explosion at a fireworks factory in town. This tragic event affected many people in the community. A short film called "Terlton" was made in 2019. It shows how the town has dealt with this difficult event.
Terlton in Movies
Terlton was one of the places where the TV show Reservation Dogs was filmed. This comedy series is about four Native American teenagers living in rural Oklahoma. It was created by filmmaker Sterlin Harjo.
