Exploring Terrateig's History

  • Hermitage of San Vicente Ferrer: A hermitage is a special chapel or church. It is often built in a quiet place. The first hermitage here was built in 1410. It was built to honor San Vicente Ferrer. The original building is no longer there. The hermitage you see today was opened in 1883.

Terrateig's Tasty Traditions

The food in Terrateig is very diverse. It is like the different landscapes around the town. For many centuries, people have farmed the land. They planted almond, olive, cherry, and fig trees on the hills. Near the river, they built dams and ditches. This helped them grow many vegetables. These included eggplants, broad beans, and pumpkins.

In the 15th century, new foods arrived. Tomatoes, corn, and potatoes came from other parts of the world. Grains, grapes, and fruit trees grew in the plains. Meat came from local farms and the mountains. Fish was brought from the coast. Sugar was also an important trade item.

Terrateig's traditional food has a Mediterranean base. It was also influenced by Arab cooking styles. The arrival of the Crown of Aragon also added to its unique flavors.

The sweets and pastries are very special. Many of them show a strong Arab influence. Some popular sweet treats include "arrop i talladetes" and "les anous i rovells al fondant." You can also find almond cakes and sweet potato cakes. Other tasty pastries are almoixàvenes, celestial cokes, and carquinyols.
