Playing College Football

Terrell Williams grew up in Los Angeles. He played college football at East Carolina University. He was a nose guard, which is a position on the defensive line. In 1995, he helped his team win the Liberty Bowl against Stanford.

Williams studied communications and history in college. After he finished playing, he started his coaching career.

Coaching in College

From 1998 to 2011, Williams coached at several colleges. He always coached the defensive line. This is the group of players who try to stop the other team from running or passing the ball.

He started at Fort Scott Community College. Then he coached at North Carolina A&T and Youngstown State. He also coached at Akron, Purdue, and Texas A&M.

Coaching in the NFL

Before becoming a full-time NFL coach, Williams had internships with three NFL teams. In 1999, he worked with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He also helped the Seattle Seahawks in 2007 and the Dallas Cowboys in 2008.

Oakland Raiders Coaching Role

In 2012, Williams got his first full-time NFL coaching job. He joined the Oakland Raiders as their defensive line coach. He worked with head coach Dennis Allen.

In 2014, his defensive line helped the Raiders' defense. They were one of the best teams at stopping opponents from running. They also made many tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

Miami Dolphins Coaching Role

Williams moved to the Miami Dolphins in 2015. He continued coaching the defensive line. He worked under head coaches Joe Philbin and Adam Gase.

In 2016, Williams helped the Dolphins have a great season. They won 10 games and made it to the playoffs. This was their first playoff appearance since 2008! Two of his defensive linemen, Cameron Wake and Ndamukong Suh, played very well. Wake had many sacks and forced fumbles. Suh also had a lot of sacks for a defensive tackle.

Tennessee Titans Coaching Role

In 2018, Williams joined the Tennessee Titans. He worked with head coach Mike Vrabel. In his first year, the Titans' defense was very strong. They were great at stopping opponents from scoring points. They also did well on third downs and in the red zone.

In 2019, Williams helped the Titans reach the AFC Championship game. This is one of the biggest games before the Super Bowl.

Detroit Lions Coaching Role

On February 21, 2024, Williams joined the Detroit Lions. He became their defensive line coach and run game coordinator. He worked under head coach Dan Campbell.

New England Patriots Coaching Role

On January 22, 2025, Williams was hired by the New England Patriots. He rejoined Mike Vrabel, who became the head coach there. Williams is now the defensive coordinator for the Patriots. This means he is in charge of the entire defense.

Family Life

Terrell Williams is married to Tifini. They have two sons named Tahj and Tyson. Sadly, Tyson passed away in 2012 at the age of 4.
