Terry Philip Balsamo II (born October 8, 1972) is an American musician. He is best known as the former guitarist for the rock bands Cold and Evanescence.

Terry Balsamo's Musical Journey

Starting with Early Bands

Terry Balsamo began his music career in the mid-1990s. In 1995, he briefly played with the band Limp Bizkit.

In 1999, Balsamo joined the band Cold. This band was from Jacksonville, Florida, just like Limp Bizkit. He worked with Cold to write and record music for their albums. These albums included 13 Ways to Bleed on Stage, released in 2000, and Year of the Spider, released in 2003.

Terry Balsamo also appeared with another band called Staind in 2001. They performed together for an MTV Unplugged show. Near the end of his time with Cold, the band toured with Evanescence in 2003.

Balsamo briefly rejoined Cold for a reunion tour in 2009. In 2016, it was announced he would return to Cold to record new music. However, by January 2018, he had left the group again.

Playing Guitar for Evanescence

In 2003, the guitarist for Evanescence, Ben Moody, left the band during a tour. Terry Balsamo stepped in to replace him as the lead guitarist. He soon became a permanent member of Evanescence.

Balsamo appeared on Evanescence's live album and DVD, Anywhere but Home, which came out in 2004. He also became a key musical partner for the band's singer and pianist, Amy Lee. They worked together on Evanescence's second album, The Open Door, released in 2006.

Terry Balsamo continued to play with Evanescence. He also helped write songs for their third album, Evanescence, which was released in 2011. In August 2015, it was announced that Balsamo had left the band. He did perform with Evanescence again in 2019 for the song "Sweet Sacrifice".

Overcoming Health Challenges

In October 2005, Terry Balsamo faced a serious health challenge. Just after finishing his guitar recordings for Evanescence's album The Open Door, he had a stroke. This happened because of a torn artery in his neck. The stroke caused the left side of his body to become weak.

Doctors explained that a blood clot in his neck caused the stroke. They thought it might have been from headbanging while performing on stage. At first, doctors were not sure if he would ever be able to play guitar again. However, Balsamo was determined to get better. He started physical therapy and worked hard to re-train his hand so he could play the guitar once more.

Terry Balsamo's Gear

Terry Balsamo uses Ibanez guitars. When recording music in the studio, he often combines different types of amplifiers to create a unique sound. He has used amps like Diezel, Mesa/Boogie Triple Rectifier, and Bogner to make a powerful "wall of metal" sound. For live performances, he has used equipment like the T.C. Electronics G-System.
