Terry Christopher Tyler (born October 30, 1956) is an American former professional basketball player. He played as a forward and is known for his time with the Detroit Pistons in the NBA.
College Basketball Career
Terry Tyler, who stands 6 feet 7 inches tall, played as a forward for Northwestern High School. After high school, he joined the University of Detroit to play for coach Dick Vitale.
During his second year, Terry was already playing amazingly, averaging a "double-double" – meaning he scored at least 10 points and had at least 10 rebounds in many games. His team, the Detroit Titans, had a fantastic run from 1974 to 1978. Coach Vitale brought in other future NBA players like Terry Duerod and John Long, making the team very strong. As a senior, Terry averaged 16.4 points and 12.6 rebounds per game.
In his junior year, 1977, the team made it to the 1977 NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament. They won their first game against Middle Tennessee but then lost a close game to Michigan. Even with that loss, they finished the season ranked #12 in the country!
In his senior year (1977–78), the team had an impressive 25 wins and only 4 losses, and they were ranked #18. Even though they didn't make it to the NCAA tournament that year, they played in the 1978 NIT. Over his four years at Detroit, Terry scored 1,649 points and set a school record with 359 blocked shots. Because of his great achievements, he was added to the Detroit Mercy Titans Hall of Fame in 2001.
Playing in the NBA
After his successful college career, Terry was chosen by the Detroit Pistons in the second round of the 1978 NBA draft. This was a special moment because the Pistons' head coach was Dick Vitale, who had also been Terry's coach at the University of Detroit.
Terry played seven seasons for the Pistons. In the 1980–81 season, he had his best scoring year, averaging 13.4 points per game. During his time with the Pistons, he even played alongside some of his old University of Detroit teammates.
In 1985, Terry decided to join the Sacramento Kings, where he played for three seasons. Leaving his hometown team was difficult for him. He once said that he always wanted to give his "110%" effort and help the team move in the right direction, even though he didn't win an NBA championship ring.
Terry finished his NBA career with the Dallas Mavericks during the 1988-89 NBA season. In total, he played 11 seasons in the NBA (from 1978 to 1989). He averaged 10.2 points and 5.4 rebounds per game over his NBA career. He was also recognized for his great start, earning a spot on the NBA All-Rookie Team in 1979. In 1986, he even took part in the exciting NBA Slam Dunk Contest, finishing 8th.
After his NBA career, Terry continued playing basketball overseas for three seasons in Italy in the Lega Basket A league.
