Playing Basketball in College
Terry Tyler was a tall player, standing 6 feet 7 inches. He played as a forward for Northwestern High School. After high school, he joined the University of Detroit to play for coach Dick Vitale.
Becoming a Star Player
By his second year, Terry was already a standout player. He averaged 17.2 points and 11.0 rebounds per game. During his time with the Detroit Titans from 1974 to 1978, the team had amazing success. Coach Vitale brought in other future NBA players like Terry Duerod and John Long.
Big Games and Records
In his junior year, the University of Detroit team made it to the 1977 NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament. They won their first game against Middle Tennessee. They then played a tough game against Michigan in the Sweet 16, losing by a close score of 86–81. The team finished that great season ranked 12th nationally.
In his senior year (1977–78), the team had a fantastic record of 25 wins and only 4 losses. They were ranked 18th but did not get into the NCAA tournament. Instead, they played in the 1978 NIT. During his four years at Detroit, Terry Tyler scored 1,649 points. He also set a school record with 359 blocked shots. In 2001, he was honored by being added to the Detroit Mercy Titans Hall of Fame.
Playing Basketball Professionally
After his successful college career, Terry Tyler was chosen by the Detroit Pistons in the second round of the 1978 NBA draft. This was largely because his college coach, Dick Vitale, became the Pistons' head coach in 1978.
Years with the Detroit Pistons
Terry played seven seasons for the Pistons. In the 1980–81 season, he had his best year, averaging 13.4 points per game. He even played alongside some of his former University of Detroit teammates, like Terry Duerod and John Long.
Moving to Other Teams
In 1985, Terry became a free agent, meaning he could choose which team to play for. He decided to sign with the Sacramento Kings, where he played for three seasons. Leaving his hometown team, the Pistons, was difficult for him. He said he always gave 110% effort and wanted fans to know he tried to make a difference.
Terry finished his NBA career with the Dallas Mavericks during the 1988-89 NBA season. He played a total of 11 seasons in the NBA, from 1978 to 1989. Throughout his NBA career, he averaged 10.2 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. He was also named to the NBA All-Rookie Team in 1979. In 1986, he took part in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest, finishing 8th.
