The woodland germander (scientific name: Teucrium scorodonia), also known as wood sage, is a type of flowering plant. It belongs to the Teucrium group, which is part of the Lamiaceae family. This family includes many well-known plants like mint and lavender.

This plant originally comes from Western Europe and Tunisia. People also grow it in gardens as an ornamental plant because it looks nice. It has even spread and grown naturally in other places like New Zealand, the Azores, and parts of North America.

What Does Woodland Germander Look Like?

The woodland germander usually grows to be about 30 to 60 centimeters (about 1 to 2 feet) tall. It's a herbaceous perennial plant, meaning its stems are soft (not woody) and it lives for more than two years. It has fuzzy stems that stand up straight and branch out.

Leaves and Flowers

The leaves of the woodland germander have small stalks (called petioles). They are shaped like triangles or long ovals, with jagged edges and a slightly crinkled look.

The flowers are pale green or yellowish and grow in a special way: they all face the same direction! Each flower has four stamens, which are the parts that produce pollen. These stamens have reddish or purple threads called filaments. The flowers grow where the upper leaves meet the stem. They are also hermaphrodite, meaning each flower has both male and female parts. They are fuzzy and have two lips, but they don't have an upper lip, which is common for plants in the Teucrium group.

When Does It Bloom?

The woodland germander usually blooms from June through August. Tiny insects, especially Hymenoptera species like bees, help pollinate these flowers. Pollination is how plants make seeds to grow new plants.

Where Does Woodland Germander Grow?

These plants like to grow in sandy soils. You can often find them in woodlands and in areas with acidic soil, like heathlands. They can grow from sea level up to about 1,500 meters (about 4,900 feet) high.
