Texas Creek (Fraser River tributary) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Texas Creek is a stream that flows into the Fraser River in British Columbia, Canada. It's located about 16 miles (26 kilometers) downstream from the town of Lillooet. The name "Texas Creek" also refers to the small community and the Texas Creek Ranch in this area.

What is Texas Creek?

Texas Creek is a stream that starts high up in the Lillooet Ranges mountains. It flows through a deep, narrow valley called a canyon. Along the sides of the canyon, there are flatter areas where the community lives.

Exploring the Area

The upper part of the canyon is wide enough for roads. These roads, originally built for logging and mining, help people explore the mountains. You can find trails that lead to high peaks and even into the wild Stein River area.

The Texas Creek Community

The community near Texas Creek is a small group of homes close to Lillooet. People who live here are part of the local government area called Electoral Area 'B' of the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District. This means they have a say in how their local area is run.

History of Texas Creek

Texas Creek is located in the traditional lands of the St'at'imc people, who are a First Nation. Some Indian reserves belonging to the T'it'q'et First Nation and Nlaka'pamux bands are nearby.

The Ancient Landslide

Long ago, a huge landslide happened at Texas Creek. This landslide was so big that it blocked the Fraser River. The river backed up and formed a very long lake, stretching for over a hundred miles (160 kilometers).

The Village by the Lake

This ancient lake helped support a large village of quiggly holes near Keatley Creek. Quiggly holes are special pit-houses built by First Nations people. This village was about 30 miles (48 kilometers) upstream from Texas Creek. The town of Lillooet, as we know it today, would have been underwater back then! Scientists believe the lake disappeared when the natural dam from the landslide finally broke. The village was last used around the year 1000 A.D.
