The Thaddeus Binford House is a historic home located in Marshalltown, Iowa. It was built in 1874 for Thaddeus Binford, who was a successful lawyer and a Quaker. This beautiful house has been recognized as an important historical place since 1984, when it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
About the Thaddeus Binford House
This house was built in the Italianate style. This style was popular in the United States during the mid-1800s. Italianate homes often have tall, narrow windows and decorative brackets under the roof. They look a bit like old Italian villas.
The house was once home to Jessie Florence Binford, who was born there in 1876. She was the daughter of Thaddeus and Angie Binford. Jessie grew up to become a very important person who helped many people.
Jessie Binford's Life and Work
Jessie Binford spent much of her life working at Hull House in Chicago. Hull House was a famous settlement house. It provided many services to people in need, especially immigrants and the poor. Jessie lived there for a long time and became a leader.
She was the executive director of the Juvenile Protective Association. This group worked to protect children and help young people. Jessie cared deeply about children's issues and making sure everyone was treated fairly.
In 1906, Jessie became the director of the Legal Aid Society at Hull House. This group helped people who could not afford a lawyer get legal help. She worked hard to make sure everyone had a chance to get fair treatment.
Jessie Binford also worked to protect the neighborhood around Hull House. She wanted to keep it a good place for families to live. She even spoke out against selling parts of the Hull House property to the city.
In 1963, Jessie Binford returned to Marshalltown, Iowa. She gave away her family home, the Thaddeus Binford House. She chose to live her last few years in a nearby hotel called the Hotel Tallcorn. Jessie Binford passed away in 1966, leaving behind a legacy of helping others.
