Đoàn Thanh Lam (born on June 19, 1969) is a famous Vietnamese singer. She is known as one of the four divas of Vietnam, which means she is one of the most important female singers in the country.

About Thanh Lam

Thanh Lam was born in Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam. Her father, Thuận Yến, was a music composer, and her mother, Thanh Hương, was a traditional music artist. She has a younger brother named Trí Minh.

When she was nine years old, Thanh Lam started learning to play the đàn tỳ bà. This is a traditional Vietnamese musical instrument, similar to a lute. She studied it at the Hanoi Conservatory of Music.

In 1985, she decided to switch her focus to vocal music, which means singing. This was a very important decision that changed her music career forever.

After winning several singing contests, Thanh Lam became very famous. One of the songs that made her well-known was Chia Tay Hoàng Hôn (Farewell Sunset). Her father wrote this song, and she sang it in a big national singing contest in 1991.

Her father was a huge supporter of her music. He wrote many songs that became big hits for Thanh Lam, like Khát Vọng (Desire), Tình Yêu Không Lời (Wordless Love), and Màu Hoa Đỏ (Color of Rose).

Thanh Lam's Music Journey

Early in her career, Thanh Lam sang with a band called Phuong Dong. This is where she met the composer Quốc Trung.

She has released more than thirty albums during her career. She has worked with many other famous Vietnamese composers and singers. Some of these include Thanh Tùng, Dương Thụ, Lê Minh Sơn, and singers like Trần Thu Hà, Mỹ Linh, Hồng Nhung, and Tùng Dương.

Thanh Lam has also worked with the Vietnamese-Danish jazz musician Niels Lan Doky. They did several music projects together. One notable project was the Vong Nguyet (Wishing Upon the Moon) show. They performed this show at the Roskilde Festival in Denmark in both 2006 and 2007.

Early Performances and Awards

When Thanh Lam was just 12 years old, in 1981, she traveled alone to a festival for children in Germany. She played the guitar and sang a song called "Mat Troi va Anh Lua." Even though she hadn't formally learned guitar, she played it very well.

In 1984, she performed at the International Youth Festival. The next year, in 1985, she began her vocal training at the Hanoi Music Institute. This was a major turning point for her.

From 1985 to 1987, she and singer Thai Bao started a music band called White Pigeon. They performed in many places. Also, from 1985 to 1991, she was part of Vietnam's National Music Crew. She performed in many different countries, including Germany, Russia, China, and Cuba.

In 1986, she won second prize at the Festival of Political Song in Berlin. She sang "Mat Troi va Anh Lua" there. In 1989, she won the Favorite Artist award at the La Habana Music Festival in Cuba.

In 1991, she won a big prize at the National Solo Artist contest for the second time. All six judges gave her perfect scores! She sang "Chia Tay Hoang Hon" and "Giot Nang Ben Them" in the final round.

Band and Live Shows

In 1991, Thanh Lam started living with composer Quoc Trung. He later formed the Phuong Dong music band, and they performed together in many shows.

In 1993, the Phuong Dong band, with Thanh Lam as the main singer, won first prize. This was at the 1st National Ballad Music Band Festival held in Da Nang.

In 1995, Thanh Lam and the Phuong Dong band put on a show called Thien Thanh at the Hanoi Opera House. This was the first music show that Quoc Trung produced for her.

In 1996, she performed for a week at the Dem Huyen Dieu show. This was her first big solo concert, or "liveshow," produced by Quoc Trung. Its success led to a national tour.

Also in 1996, she was invited to perform at two international festivals. She sang at the Fukuoka Asian Pop Song Festival in Japan and the Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland. At the Jazz Festival, she even sang a duet with a famous Swiss singer, Stefan Eicher.

From 1997 to 2001, Thanh Lam consistently received the Top 10 Favorite Artist award at the Green Wave Awards. Many of her songs helped her win these awards, including "Khat Vong," "Cho Em Mot Ngay," and "Chia Tay Hoang Hon."
