Thanh Lam, born on June 19, 1969, is a famous singer from Vietnam. Many people know her as one of "the four divas of Vietnam." This means she is considered one of the country's top female singers.

Early Life and Music Journey

Thanh Lam was born in Hanoi, Vietnam. Her father, Thuận Yến, was a music composer. Her mother, Thanh Hương, was a traditional music artist. She has a younger brother named Trí Minh.

Starting Music at a Young Age

When she was nine, Thanh Lam began studying the đàn tỳ bà. This is a traditional Vietnamese musical instrument. She studied it at the Hanoi Conservatory of Music. In 1985, she decided to change her focus. She started to study vocal music instead. This was a very important moment in her music career.

Becoming a Star

Thanh Lam won several singing contests. She became famous with her father's song, Chia Tay Hoàng Hôn (Farewell Sunset). She sang this song in the National Professional Solo Singer contest in 1991. Her father was a big supporter of her music. He wrote many songs that became Thanh Lam's popular hits. These songs include Khát Vọng (Desire), Tình Yêu Không Lời (Wordless Love), and Màu Hoa Đỏ (Color of Rose).

Singing Career Highlights

Early in her career, Thanh Lam sang with the Phuong Dong band. There, she met composer Quốc Trung. She has released more than thirty albums so far. She has worked with many well-known Vietnamese composers and singers. Some of these include Thanh Tùng, Dương Thụ, Lê Minh Sơn, Trần Thu Hà, Mỹ Linh, Hồng Nhung, Tùng Dương, and Trọng Tấn.

International Performances

Thanh Lam has also worked with the Vietnamese-Danish jazz musician Niels Lan Doky. They worked together on several music projects. One notable project was the Vong Nguyet (Wishing Upon the Moon) show. This show was part of the Roskilde Festival in 2006 and 2007.

In 1981, when she was 12, Thanh Lam traveled alone to a children's festival in Germany. She played the guitar and sang a song there. In 1984, she performed at the International Youth Festival.

Joining Music Groups and Touring

From 1985 to 1987, Thanh Lam and singer Thai Bao started the White Pigeon music band. They performed in many places. From 1985 to 1991, she was also a member of the National's Music Crew. She performed in many different countries. These included Germany, Russia, Bulgaria, China, Cuba, and the Netherlands.

In 1986, she sang the song Mat Troi va Anh Lua at a festival in Berlin. She won second prize for her performance. In 1989, she won the Favorite Artist award at the La Habana Music Festival in Cuba.

Major Awards and Shows

In 1991, Thanh Lam won a big prize at the National Solo Artist contest for the second time. All six judges gave her perfect scores. She sang "Chia Tay Hoang Hon" and "Giot Nang Ben Them" in the final.

In 1993, her band Phuong Dong won first prize at the 1st National Ballad Music Band Festival. This festival was held in Da Nang. In 1995, Thanh Lam and Phuong Dong launched the show Thien Thanh. This was at the Ha Noi's Opera House.

In 1996, she performed at the Dem Huyen Dieu show for a week. This was her first major live show. Its success led to a national tour. Also in 1996, she was invited to perform at the Fukuoka Asian Pop Song Festival in Japan. She also performed at the Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland. At the Jazz Festival, she sang "Ho Mai Nhi" with a jazz remix. She also sang a duet with Swiss singer Stefan Eicher.

From 1997 to 2001, Thanh Lam consistently received the Top 10 Favorite Artist award. This was part of the Green Wave Award. Many of her songs helped her win these awards.

Family Life

Thanh Lam was married to composer Quốc Trung from 1994 to 2004. They have two children together.

Her Talented Children

Her daughter, Nguyễn Thiên Thanh, is a bright actress and composer. She used to work at the Youth Theatre of Vietnam. In 2012, she moved to Singapore. In April 2018, she won the best songwriter of the year award in Hanoi.

Her son, Nguyễn Đăng Quang, is a gifted piano player. He was named one of the 10 young faces of Vietnam in 2014. He has won many international prizes for his piano playing.
