Thawa is an Aboriginal language from New South Wales, Australia. Sadly, very few people speak Thawa today, so it is considered nearly extinct. Some of the last speakers are local elders.
Thawa is sometimes grouped with another language called Dyirringany. People thought they might be different ways of speaking the same language, like different accents or dialects. However, it's not fully clear how similar these two languages really were.

Bringing Thawa Back to Life
In 2015, something exciting happened to help save the Thawa language. Local Yuin people worked together with Tathra Public School in Tathra. They created a new app!
How the App Helps Learning
This app is a special tool to help teach both the Thawa language and the Dhurga language. To make the app, they used old audio recordings of elders speaking the language. They also used old documents written by early explorers and settlers who recorded the language.
Who Helped with the Project?
One of the main people who helped with this project was Graham Moore. He has also written a book about Aboriginal languages. Projects like this are very important for keeping languages like Thawa alive for future generations.
