The Story Begins
Kylie Lovett and Sophie Smith have been best friends forever. They have known each other since they were babies. As they get ready to start seventh grade at Meridian Middle School, they go shopping. They want to find the perfect outfits for the first day.
Both girls end up buying cool matching jeans. These jeans have a red dragon design stitched down one leg. But soon, Kylie changes her mind. She thinks it might not be cool to look "matchy-matchy". So, they agree that neither of them will wear the dragon jeans.
First Day Mix-Up
On the first day of school, Sophie keeps her promise. She wears bright lime green corduroy pants instead. But she feels sad and hurt when Kylie arrives wearing the dragon jeans. Kylie quickly realizes her mistake. She says sorry right away. Kylie explains she was in such a rush that morning. She simply forgot about their agreement.
After this, the two friends meet up with Joel Leo. Joel is Kylie's neighbor and a family friend. Sophie starts to develop a crush on Joel.
Cheerleading Tryouts
Later, on the bus ride home, Kylie tells Sophie a big secret. She signed them both up for cheerleading tryouts! Sophie is not excited about this idea at all. But Joel encourages her. He knows Sophie is a great gymnast. He thinks she would be good at cheerleading.
The girls practice their routine many times. Finally, it is time for the tryouts. During her turn, Kylie gets nervous and makes a big mistake. She ends up looking silly in front of everyone.
The Team List
The next day, the list of who made the team is posted. Sophie is very happy because she made the cheerleading squad. But Kylie gets a different role. She is chosen to be the team's mascot. The mascot for Meridian Middle School is a mule.
New Friends and Parties
During cheerleading practices, Sophie slowly starts to hang out with the "cool crowd." This group includes Keisha Reyes, who is like the "Queen Bee" of the school. Keisha even gives Sophie a new nickname, "Bitsy." Keisha's best friend is Courtney Knox. There are also Amie and Marie Gildencrest. All of these girls are cheerleaders.
The Party Invitation
Keisha decides to throw a party at her house. Sophie gets an invitation, but Kylie does not. Sophie really wants Kylie to come. So, she convinces Kylie and Joel to go to the party with her.
Just a few minutes after they arrive, Kylie and Joel decide to leave. They find the party boring. But Sophie refuses to go with them. She stays at the party. While there, she talks to Scott Hersh. Scott is Kylie's crush. Sophie does not know that Scott is also Keisha's ex-boyfriend.
Halloween Ball Trouble
Later, at the Halloween Ball, Sophie feels left out. She is ignored by the "cool crowd." Even Kylie and Joel ignore her after they see her dancing with Scott.
Making Things Right
Sophie decides she needs to apologize to Kylie. But then, at a school game, Kylie starts making fun of the cheerleaders. This makes Sophie furious. Because of her actions, Kylie gets suspended from the mascot squad. A new mascot is brought in to replace her.
The Big Game
The new mascot is not very good at the job. The school team is about to lose the game. Sophie quickly comes up with an emergency plan. After a short talk, the cheerleading squad decides to bring Kylie back as the mascot.
With Kylie back, the Mules (the school team) end up winning the game! After the win, Kylie and Sophie finally make up. They are best friends again. Kylie then shares another secret: Joel likes Sophie. Sophie tells Kylie that she likes Joel back.
