The Amazing Live Sea Monkeys was a fun live-action TV show that aired for a short time in 1992. It had 11 episodes, running from September 19 to November 28. The story is about three tiny Sea-Monkeys named Dave, Bill, and Aquarius. A kind scientist, called the Professor (Howie Mandel), accidentally made them grow to human size! The show followed their funny adventures in the human world. Some famous guest stars appeared, like Stephen Furst, Gilbert Gottfried, Larry Melman, and Vernon Wells.
How the Show Was Made
The idea for The Amazing Live Sea Monkeys came from the popular Sea-Monkeys product. These tiny pets were first created in 1957 by Harold von Braunhut. In the 1970s, they became very famous through comic book ads. These ads were designed by Joe Orlando, who later became a Vice President at DC Comics and an Associate Publisher for Mad magazine.
Howie Mandel, a well-known comedian, got the idea for the show when his daughter wanted to get Sea-Monkeys. He remembered having them as a kid too. Mandel thought, "This could be bigger than the Ninja Turtles!" He then reached out to The Chiodo Brothers, who are known for their special effects.
The TV network CBS decided to produce the show. It aired in both the United States and Australia. The way the Sea-Monkey characters looked in the show was based on the fantasy drawings from Joe Orlando's old comic book ads.
What the Show Was About
The main idea of the show was that the Professor had accidentally made three Sea-Monkeys grow to human size. The funny stories came from their struggles to understand and fit into the human world. Each Sea-Monkey had a unique and silly personality trait:
- Aquarius could not keep a secret, no matter how hard he tried.
- Bill was strangely afraid of beards, especially the "Imperial" style.
- Dave would get super excited whenever he heard polka music.
Sometimes, the Sea-Monkeys would meet their next-door neighbors, the Brentwoods. The Brentwoods' daughter, Sheila (Eliza Schneider), became a great friend to the Sea-Monkeys. After The Amazing Live Sea Monkeys finished, another science show called Beakman's World took its place. Interestingly, Eliza Schneider also played the main female role in that series.
