History of the Company
By 1998, the company Dr Pepper/Seven Up (which was owned by Cadbury Schweppes at the time) faced a challenge. They didn't own their own bottling factories. This meant they had to rely on other companies, or even their competitors like Coca-Cola and Pepsi, to bottle their drinks. Coca-Cola and Pepsi also had better ways to deliver their drinks and more influence with stores and restaurants.
Starting The American Bottling Company
In February 1998, Cadbury Schweppes decided to team up with a company called Carlyle Group. Together, they created a new company called The American Bottling Company. This new company started by combining two big independent bottling groups from the Midwest: Beverage American and Select Beverages.
Becoming Dr Pepper/Seven Up Bottling Group
In 1999, The American Bottling Company joined with the Dr Pepper Bottling Company. The new, combined company was renamed the Dr Pepper/Seven Up Bottling Group (DPSUBG). The main goal was to give Dr Pepper/Seven Up more control over how their drinks were delivered. Between 1999 and 2006, this group bought several other regional bottling companies.
Cadbury Schweppes Takes Full Control
In 2006, Cadbury Schweppes completely bought the Dr Pepper/Seven Up Bottling Group from the Carlyle Group. At this time, the bottling company was renamed the Cadbury Schweppes Bottling Group. Owning the bottling company fully allowed Cadbury Schweppes to build its own network for bottling and delivering its soft drink brands in the U.S. These brands included popular drinks like Dr Pepper and Snapple.
Forming Dr Pepper Snapple Group
In 2008, the Cadbury Schweppes Bottling Group and other drink parts of Cadbury Schweppes separated to form a new company called Dr Pepper Snapple Group. Because of this change, the bottling company was renamed the Dr Pepper Snapple Bottling Group.
Returning to The American Bottling Company Name
Later in 2008, the Dr Pepper Snapple Bottling Group merged with its own smaller company, The American Bottling Company. After this merger, the company decided to go back to its original name: The American Bottling Company.
