The Ardea, once called 3720, is a very tall apartment building in Portland, Oregon. It stands 30 stories high, reaching about 99 meters (325 feet) into the sky. This building is located in the South Waterfront area of Portland.
The Ardea was finished in March 2009. However, people started moving in earlier, in August 2008, as parts of the building were ready. The company Gerding Edlen developed The Ardea. GBD Architects designed it, and Hoffman Construction built it.
The building was first planned to be a place where people could buy their homes, called condominiums. But there were too many condos for sale in Portland at the time. So, the plan changed, and The Ardea became apartments for rent instead. The Ardea is now one of the tallest buildings in Portland. It is as tall as the John Ross Tower.
Building Features
The Ardea has 30 floors. It also includes a smaller, five-story building next to it. The tower has 323 apartment units. There are 380 parking spaces underground for residents. The ground floor also has more than 1,600 square meters (16,000 square feet) of shops and businesses.
Building Materials
The outside of The Ardea is made from different materials. These include large windows, precast concrete panels, and metal coverings. In 2009, The Ardea won an award called the "Excellence in Concrete Award." This was for the special way concrete was used on the building's exterior. You can see it in two vertical stripes on the north and south sides.
Green Building Design
The Ardea was designed to be very friendly to the environment. It was expected to receive a special award called LEED Gold status. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It is a program that recognizes buildings that are built in a way that saves energy and protects the environment.
