The Beacon is a tall, modern apartment building in downtown Cleveland. It is located at 515 Euclid Avenue. Construction on The Beacon started in late 2017 and was finished in late 2019.
This building stands about 350 feet (107 meters) tall. The city council even gave special permission for it to be taller than the usual 250-foot (76-meter) limit. The Beacon has 29 floors. Eight of these floors are for parking cars. The other 19 floors have one and two-bedroom apartments. There is also a cool lounge area on the rooftop.
Why The Beacon Was Built
Cleveland's downtown area has become very popular again over the last twenty years. More and more people want to live there.
- From 2000 to 2015, the number of new homes in downtown Cleveland went up by 77%.
- About 95% of all homes there were occupied.
- By 2017, nearly 15,000 people lived in downtown Cleveland.
This growth shows that downtown Cleveland is the most populated downtown area in Ohio. It has more residents than downtown areas in Columbus, Cincinnati, and Akron. Because so many people want to live in the center of Cleveland, more housing was needed. The Beacon helps meet this need. It is the third-tallest apartment building in the city.
Design of The Beacon
The Beacon building sits on top of an eight-level parking garage. This garage was built several years earlier for a different project that never happened. Using this existing garage helped save money on building costs.
Who Designed It?
The winning design for The Beacon was created by two architecture companies. One was Westlake Reed Leskosky from Cleveland. The other was NADAA, a company from Boston. They presented their design to the Cleveland City Council.
What Does It Look Like?
The outside of The Beacon is covered with special metal panels. These panels are different colors and fit together like a puzzle. They reflect the sun and make the building look bright. The colors also change from darker to lighter as you look up. This makes the building seem even taller and thinner.
The place where The Beacon was built is interesting. More than ten years ago, another apartment tower was planned for the same spot. However, that building was never built because of money problems and design issues. The Beacon is the first new tall apartment building built in Cleveland's main business area since 1974.
