The Big Green is a fun family sports movie from 1995. It was made by Walt Disney Pictures. The film stars Olivia d'Abo and Steve Guttenberg. Holly Goldberg Sloan wrote and directed it. Other actors include Bug Hall, Chauncey Leopardi, and Patrick Renna. The story is about a group of kids in a small Texas town. They are not very good at sports. An English teacher helps them form a soccer team. They learn about teamwork and believing in themselves.

The Story of The Big Green

New Teacher, New Sport

Anna Montgomery (Olivia d'Abo) is a teacher from England. She comes to a small town in Texas called Elma. At first, her students feel like they can't achieve much. They don't pay attention in class.

One day, Anna tries something different. She breaks a globe to get their attention. This leads to the kids learning to play soccer. They have their first practice. Anna then tells them they are in a league in Austin. Their first game is the very next day!

Building a Team

Sheriff's Deputy Tom Palmer (Steve Guttenberg) joins Anna as a co-coach. He also starts to like Anna. The team travels to Austin for their first game. They play against the Knights, who are the best team. The Elma kids don't know how to play well yet. They lose the game by a score of 18–0.

After this big loss, the kids want to quit. But then, a new student named Juan Morales (Anthony Esquivel) arrives. He is very good at soccer. The team convinces his mother to let him play. With Juan, the team gets much better. They are now called "The Big Green."

Road to the Championship

The Big Green team starts winning games. They have a great record of eight wins, two losses, and one tie. This amazing run earns them a chance to play the Knights again. This time, it's for the championship!

The whole town of Elma gets excited for the final game. Jay Huffer (Jay O. Sanders), who coaches the Knights, comes back to Elma. He causes trouble for Juan's family. Deputy Tom Palmer has to look into the situation. This makes Juan and his mother leave Elma. Kate Douglas (Jessica Robertson), one of the players, is very upset. Anna helps Kate stay focused on the team.

The Big Game and a Happy Ending

On the day of the championship, Tom tries to find Juan. But he can't find him before the game starts. At halftime, The Big Green is losing 2–0.

With only 10 minutes left, Juan arrives with Tom and his mother. Tom announces that he is helping Juan's mother. This means they can stay in the country! Juan enters the game. He helps The Big Green score their first goal. Then, with the very last kick, he scores the tying goal! The score is 2-2, so the game goes to a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, the score is still tied. The Knights' captain steps up to kick. The Big Green goalie, Larry Musgrove (Patrick Renna), has a special way of dealing with pressure. He imagines himself as a "monster" to scare the other player. He saves the kick!

The final kick for The Big Green is taken by Newt Shaw (Bug Hall). He is the smallest and youngest player. Newt scores, and The Big Green wins the championship! Coach Huffer, who made a bet, has to kiss The Big Green's goat mascot. He is not happy about it!

The movie ends with a new sign in Elma. It shows the team and celebrates their success. They did well on the field and in school!
