The Black Cauldron is an animated fantasy movie from 1985. It was made by Walt Disney Feature Animation. The movie is based on the first two books of The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander. These books are inspired by old Welsh mythology stories.
The story is about a young boy named Taran. He is an assistant pig-keeper. Taran dreams of becoming a hero. He goes on a dangerous quest to stop the evil Horned King. The Horned King wants to find a magical item called the Black Cauldron. He plans to use its power to create an army of undead warriors and rule the world. Taran must find the cauldron first to keep it out of the Horned King's hands.
Making the Movie
The Black Cauldron was directed by Ted Berman and Richard Rich. They also directed another Disney animated movie called The Fox and the Hound. Making this movie was a big project for Disney. It was one of their most expensive animated films at the time.
How the Movie Was Received
When The Black Cauldron first came out, it was not very popular. It cost about $25 million to make. However, it only earned around $21 million in movie theaters in North America. This made it one of the movies that did not earn much money for Walt Disney Animation Studios.
Over time, more people started to watch and enjoy the movie. It has now become a "cult movie." This means that even though it was not a big hit at first, it gained a loyal group of fans who really like it.
