The Boar Hunt (which means La caza del jabalí in Spanish) is a famous painting from 1775. It was created by a well-known Spanish artist named Francisco Goya. This painting is special because it's the oldest surviving "tapestry cartoon" made by Goya. A tapestry cartoon is like a big drawing or painting that artists use as a guide to create a woven tapestry.

The painting shows a thrilling scene. You can see men working together with their dogs. They are using long spears, called boar spears, to hunt and kill a wild boar.

About The Boar Hunt Painting

This painting is part of Goya's very first series of tapestry cartoons. These artworks were made for a special purpose. They were going to be turned into beautiful tapestries. These tapestries were meant to decorate the royal palace of El Escorial.

Who Was It Made For?

The tapestries were ordered by Charles, Prince of Asturias. He later became King Charles IV of Spain. His wife, Maria Luisa of Parma, was also part of the plan. The tapestries were designed to fit perfectly in their royal home.

How Do We Know It's Goya's Work?

We know for sure that Goya painted The Boar Hunt. The size of the painting matches old records. These records are like receipts from the Royal Tapestry Factory. They show the exact dimensions of the tapestries Goya delivered.

How Goya Worked on the Painting

Francisco Goya did not work alone on this project. He had help and guidance from his family. His brother-in-law, Francisco Bayeu, supervised his work. Francisco Bayeu's brother, Ramón, also helped. Goya finished this painting along with four others. He delivered them to the weaver, Cornelio Vandergroten, on May 24, 1775.
